Becoming a Student Member
There are no minimum educational requirements. However, the Institute wishes to ensure that those who begin their studies for the Advanced Diploma are capable of passing the examinations. For this reason, all applicants are advised to meet certain minimum educational or professional experience requirements.
These guidelines are set out in the 2009 Handbook (pdf).
Student registration
If you wish to become a Student, the next step is to complete a Student Registration Application Form (pdf) and return it to the PMI together with:
- Any relevant documentation.
- Payment to cover the registration fee and the annual subscription.
Subscriptions and fees
Details can be found on the fees page.
Timing of application
Applications for Student Registration may be submitted throughout the year. If you wish to sit Advanced Diploma examinations in April you should submit an application in the late Summer of the preceding year. If you wish to sit examinations in October you should submit application in the early Spring. This will allow you a full six months to study for the Institute's examinations. All documentation necessary to complete registration as a Student must reach the Institute by the relevant closing date. For details of closing dates see the dates page.
Acceptance
You should expect to receive a letter from the Institute within three weeks of submitting your application indicating whether you have been accepted as a Student.
Continuing as a Student
Once you have registered as a Student of the Institute you will continue in Membership providing you pay the annual subscription. The annual subscription is payable in advance on 1 September each year. As a Student of the Institute:
- you are eligible to study and enter for the Advanced Diploma examinations
- you will receive a copy of PMI News on a monthly basis
- you are eligible to attend conferences and seminars at preferential rates
- you are eligible to apply for reduced subscriptions to certain publications.
Ordinary Members undertaking the Advanced Diploma examinations must also pay their annual subscription.
Lapsed membership
If a Student does not pay the annual subscription his/her Membership will lapse.
Those who have been Student Members in the past, but whose membership has lapsed, and now wish to rejoin should contact the PMI on 020 7392 7410 or education@pensions-pmi.org.uk to discuss the procedure.
