How it works  Programme structure

The PMI Mentoring and Development Programme is a 12-month opportunity designed to support both mentors and mentees in a way that works for you, at your own pace, in a format that fits your schedule. It’s structured yet flexible, giving you the tools to build a meaningful mentoring relationship.

  • Duration: 12 months.
  • One-to-one sessions with mentor: Minimum of six throughout the year.
  • Meeting frequency: At least one meeting every two months, with additional sessions scheduled at the pair’s discretion (format and timing flexible).
Matching
  • Each mentor is paired with one mentee for the full year, with pairings based on application responses, to ensure a good match.
  • The first introductory call includes the mentee’s manager to align expectations and goals.
Development and Learning
  • Mentee requirement: All mentees must complete the IoL ‘My Leadership Programme’, covering at least 10 components, including self-awareness.
  • Mentor opportunity: Mentors can opt in to complete the‘My Leadership Programme’ as well (approximately 15–20 hours for 10 modules, though time may vary based on prior knowledge and learning styles).
  • Resources: Participants receive free access to The Institute of Leadership’s (IoL) library of videos, articles, webinars and other learning materials.
  • Programme guide: Participants are given a PMI workbook outlining key dates and guidance for the 2026/27 programme.
  • Virtual touchpoints: PMI will organise six virtual calls throughout the year featuring external guest speakers covering mentoring best practices and key topics in the pensions sector, relevant for both mentors and mentees.
  • Ongoing monitoring: PMI will track progress throughout the programme and receive monthly engagement reports from IoL on mentee participation in ‘My Leadership Programme’.
All participants are expected to:
  • Maintain an active PMI membership for the duration of the programme.
