DB pensions webinar: Investing for endgame in a low credit spread environment

Webinar on BrightTALK

Corporate bonds have long played an important role in helping defined benefit (DB) pension schemes de-risk as they move towards their endgame, offering predictable cashflows and additional yield over gilts. By mid-2026, however, credit spreads had fallen close to their lowest level in nearly 25 years.
With credit spreads at historically low levels, schemes are reviewing how this affects investment decisions and endgame planning.

In this webinar, our panel will discuss how DB schemes, whether targeting buyout or choosing to run on, can respond and adapt their investment strategy in a changing market.

Trustee Director

Andrew Harrison

Trustee Director

I currently chair five DB pension schemes and am a trustee for several other schemes, varying in size from around £50 million to £10 billion. I am also a trustee on a number of DB investment committees, three of which I chair including a large scheme with a financial services sponsor. I sit on several specialist implementation and income generating end-game strategy sub-groups, two of which I also chair.
Prior to joining LawDeb in 2017 as a professional trustee, I was Head of Fixed Income Product Specialists at Aberdeen Asset Management and prior to that MD of the LDI team at BlackRock/Barclays Global Investors where I worked with some of the largest UK pension schemes.
With an investment background, I have extensive experience of designing, implementing and managing liability driven investment (LDI) strategies, in addition to dynamic deficit-reducing investment strategies and end-game strategies covering a broad spectrum of asset classes.
I have also worked with various schemes to implement buy-ins and buy-outs; have experience of close engagement with the Pensions Regulator and have worked closely with a challenged sponsor to implement a robust quarterly covenant monitoring process.
I am currently Chair of the CFA Technical Committee that oversees the CMA required reporting standards in fiduciary management.

Whats covered

  • Timing investment decisions - Should schemes looking to de-risk, or move towards a more contractual portfolio, invest in investment grade credit now or wait for future opportunities?
  •  Broadening the investment toolkit - Which other assets can support endgame investing, and how can schemes position themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities?
  •  Learning from history - What can 100 years of credit spread data tell us about today's market, and are we entering a different investment environment?

We will also share the latest findings from the Schroders and the PMI Defined Benefit Survey, highlighting current trends in endgame planning.

Join us for a practical discussion exploring the investment considerations facing defined benefit pension schemes as they plan for their endgame.
