Certificate in Pensions Scheme Member Guidance

This qualification is designed to meet the needs of pensions staff who regularly liaise with members selecting options from a pension scheme. This qualification is concerned with improving member outcomes and providing guidance on benefit options. As this guidance is in the area of non-regulated advice the qualification provides an overview of the distinction between regulated and non-regulated advice, the different types of pension scheme and the factors that need to be considered in making decisions in regard to benefits. It covers various options and situations, including: joining, leaving, transferring, retirements, commutation, death, and divorce.

Overview

Who is this course for?

This qualification is designed for pensions professionals who regularly support scheme members in making benefit decisions. It focuses on improving member outcomes by helping staff provide clear, confident guidance across a range of scenarios. Including but not limited to:

  • Pensions staff who regularly liaise with members about benefit options
  • Customer-facing professionals working in scheme administration or member support
  • Communications and engagement teams who help members understand their choices
  • Those working in non-regulated guidance roles who want to build confidence and competence in member interactions
It’s particularly suited to professionals who want to improve how they communicate complex pension information and support members in making informed decisions.

Assessment method

The qualification is delivered in three stages:

 

Stage 1 – Modules 1 to 4 (Multiple Choice Questions)

 

Once registered, your details will be uploaded to the TestReach portal. You’ll receive instructions via email on how to book and sit your assessment.

 

Recommended study time: 150 hours

 

Pass mark: 80% overall

Stage 2 – Modules 5 to 11 (Case Study Assignments)

 

After completing Stage 1, email PMIQualifications@pensions-pmi.org.uk to request your case study documents.

 

Submit your answers via email for marking by PMI’s expert assessors

 

Recommended study time: 6 months

 

Pass mark: 80% overall

 

Stage 3 – Module 12 (Oral Assessment)

 

You’ll be given a scenario to act out over a mock call via Microsoft Teams, simulating a member interaction.

Must be booked at least 4 weeks in advance after completing Modules 5 to 11
Assessment duration: 30 minutes
Pass mark: 67%
Results issued approximately 2 weeks after assessment
Resit fee applies if failed

Cost

To sit this qualification, you must be a PMI Student member. If applicable, a £287 student membership fee will be automatically added at checkout when you register for the exam, no separate membership application is required.

Assessment support

 

We are committed to fair and consistent assessment processes. Special consideration may be granted where a learner has been temporarily affected by circumstances beyond their control which may have impacted exam performance such as:

  • Illness
  • Injury
  • Issues at the exam centre (for example, noise or disruption)

Prior learning

There are no formal entry requirements to take this qualification. However, we recommend that candidates who have some relevant experience and/or qualifications.

 

Study

The aims of this qualification include:

  • Improving pension scheme member outcomes
  • Enhancing professionalism and communication skills of customer facing staff
  • Increasing confidence and trust in work place pensions
  • Enabling effective delivery of the Guidance Guarantee at the point of retirement for DC scheme members

Grades
There are two grades for this assessment (P) pass or (F) fail.

Publication of results
Results are sent to candidates as soon as they are available after the oral assessment. We will not communicate results to a candidate’s employer.

Special circumstances
Candidates who may require special arrangements for reasons of disability or similar should contact the PMI. Sufficient time should be allowed for such requests to be considered and for any arrangements to be made.

Apprenticeships

This qualification can be used as part of the Workplace Pensions Trailblazer Apprenticeship. Amongst the many benefits of the apprenticeship is the opportunity to access Government funding to cover the cost of the qualifications and any associated training. 

Employers/training providers wishing to use this qualification as part of the apprenticeship should use the apprenticeship specific registration/entry forms.

 

Designatory initials

Upon completion of the CPSMG qualification, individuals can apply for Professional level of membership from the PMI and have the designatory initials ProfPMI after their name.

 

Certificates

Candidates who pass the examination receive a certificate which will be included in their results letter/confirmation.
