Barnett Waddingham - Making the Award in Pensions Essentials accessible for every employer

We are a leading UK professional services consultancy specialising in risk, pensions, investment and insurance, providing third-party administration services to a diverse client base through our pension administration team.

As part of our commitment to supporting professional development across both the private and public sector, we offer Award in Pensions Essentials (APE) qualification to employers who may not have the capacity to offer this qualification internally, as part of our role as a PMI Examination Partner.

We strive to find training solutions that maximise advantages for both trainees and their employers. Our all-in-one solution ensures that employers who are not able to run their own APE programme can still invest in their people and give them access to a qualification that builds confidence and capability in pension administration.

As part of our fully comprehensive service, we:

  • provide all learning materials aligned with the official PMI APE syllabus;
  • create and set exam papers that meet PMI learning outcomes;
  • provide mock examination papers to ensure students are fully prepared for the real thing;
  • manage the entire examination process, including invigilation and results;
  • liaise with the PMI to arrange student membership and certificates upon qualification; and

It has unparalleled expertise, underpinned by its experience as the primary services provider to one of the UK’s largest defined benefit pension schemes - the BT Pension Scheme (BTPS). 

In April 2023, Brightwell opened its capabilities to other DB schemes and in February 2025, went live as the administrator for the Mineworker’s Pension Scheme (MPS).

The LGA represents local government at a national level. Its LGPS pensions team works to promote best practice, provide support, and drive improvements for LGPS administering authorities and employers. The LGPS pensions team provides the Certificate in LGPS Administration, a qualification for those involved with pensions administration in the LGPS, as well as a range of other training courses for pensions administrators, employers and committee and board members.
