Now entering its seventh year, the 12‑month initiative pairs senior industry professionals with mentees seeking personalised support, career development and sector insight.
The programme, sponsored by People’s Partnership and delivered in collaboration with The Institute of Leadership (IoL), begins on 5 May 2026, with applications closing on 6 April 2026.
Varsha Gicas, Chief Customer Officer at the PMI, said:
“The Mentoring and Development Programme is one of the most meaningful ways our members can shape the future of pensions. It builds capability, confidence and community - supporting individuals at pivotal moments in their careers while ensuring the sector continues to thrive.
“We encourage anyone considering joining as a mentor or mentee to get involved and make a real difference.”
Designed to support both new and progressing pensions professionals, the programme offers one‑to‑one mentoring, structured development and opportunities to build confidence, expand networks and gain clarity on career pathways.
Sessions are flexible, with at least six meetings scheduled across the year at a pace that works for the mentoring pair.
A mentor and mentee’s perspective
PMI mentor and pensions manager Sukhjit Dhillon, who has supported five mentees since joining the programme in 2021, says mentoring has helped demonstrate the breadth and opportunity within pensions.
Sukhjit, who works for First Bus, said: “People often think pensions is boring or too complicated. I wanted to help newcomers see the huge amount of opportunity and variety in the industry. Seeing someone progress is incredibly rewarding. You watch them tick off every goal set and grow in confidence along the way.”
Encouraging others to take part, he added: “Mentoring is powerful for both sides. Mentees get guidance from someone who’s walked the path, and mentors help shape the future of the industry. If we want the sector to thrive, we need to open doors and support people coming in.” (Read a full case study about Sukhjit's experience.)
Gareth Stears, Business Development Manager at Aries Insight, was initially a mentee on the programme, and then became a mentor. He said: “It was a very positive experience for me. I still think about the things my mentor suggested to me, and it inspired me enough to become a mentor myself. It’s changed the way I do my job for the better and I have a lot more confidence. The programme is highly recommended.”
